Kyoto Prefecture (Kyoto-fu) is located in the Kinki region on Honshu island,
Japan. The capital is the city of Kyoto, as well as a major part of the
Osaka-Kobe-Kyoto metropolitan area. Kyoto is separated in the middle by
the Tanba Mountains. This makes the climate of Kyoto very different in
the north and south. Kyoto is surrounded on three sides by mountains known
as Higashiyama, Kitayama and Nishiyama, with a height just under 1000 meters
above sea level. The Kyoto area has some of the most famous temples, shrines,
palaces and gardens in Japan.
